Topic: Why we didn't do venti hashing (and ultimately why "unlimited" didn't work)

Venti is a storage methodology of identifying X sized bytes using a 160 bit SHA1. The catch is that 56KB > X > 512B.

It looks like it’d be easy to increase the maximum value of X, so that shouldn’t be a reason to rule Venti out.

Do I want my song to be hashed up and “shared with other owners? The answer: NO.

Is there any logic behind this? It seems like the feature would have zero user visibility, would be easy to code, and would save you a load of cash.

Since many people import their music from CDs using iTunes without ever changing the default settings, the mp3/m4a files should be indistinguishable across many computers.

Caveat: some have mentioned using MD5, while this is possible, MD5 is not collision proof.

It’s as collision proof in practice as Sha1 is.
